Hamidreza Shafiei and the Feminine Silence in Roshanak Sattari’s Painting

The presence of the woman in this piece has been transformed into nature itself; yet on deeper levels, it conveys a heavy silence, a feminine solitude, and a profound introspection, all enclosed within a vibrant and living natural world.

ArtDayMe: Roshanak Sattari, a young and accomplished painter whose artistic presence extends beyond Iran into Southeast Asia, recently contributed a new work to the joint project of Vesta Color Paints and Mojdeh Gallery, offering a unique piece as part of this creative collaboration.

Her painting, part of the series “Woman in Minimal Silence,” is created with Vesta oil and acrylic paints on canvas, sized 100x80 cm.

Hamidreza Shafiei, director of Vesta Color Paints, expressed his delight in this visually captivating work created with Vesta’s colors. He thanked the distinguished artist Roshanak Sattari for her participation in the project and shared his interpretation of the piece:

"To me, the depiction of a woman in this painting becomes one with nature. Yet, on deeper layers, it conveys a heavy silence, feminine solitude, and deep introspection that is enclosed within a vibrant, living landscape."

He emphasized that: "At first glance, the combination of Vesta oil and acrylic paints creates a textured, compelling atmosphere. The woman, rendered with realistic precision, is set against a background of impressionistic blotches in green and yellow. This contrast between the detailed figure and the expressive background draws the viewer’s focus to the central subject."

The woman’s dark outfit—with olive green sleeves—establishes not just a visual contrast with the lively natural surroundings, but also a conceptual one.

"The dark clothing against the bright green landscape subtly hints at the unrest within the subject. The artist’s creativity lies in contemporizing the figure—appearing as part of nature, yet metaphorically surrounded by dark clouds."

Shafiei adds: "The woman sits silently and motionless on a simple chair. A small house in the far distance, in the upper-right corner of the canvas, seems to symbolize a forgotten refuge—a motherland, a lost memory, or a safe past that now feels distant and unreachable. Her gaze extends beyond the frame—not toward the viewer or the house. Perhaps she searches for unknown horizons, or wrestles with a mind full of unanswered questions. This distant gaze, paired with her closed body language, evokes deep introspection and profound silence."

He sees the painting as: "A metaphor for the condition of many women in the contemporary world—caught between tradition (symbolized by the house) and modernity (reflected in clothing and environment); voiceless yet observant, distant yet present. The plain wooden chair, formal seated posture, and ordinary shoes—all symbolize the urban contemporary woman, caught between her social identity and inner self."

In conclusion, Hamidreza Shafiei states: "In Woman in Minimal Silence, Roshanak Sattari skillfully uses color, figure, and space to depict a multi-layered image of the modern woman—a figure immersed in silence, observing the world around her from afar, isolated in nature, and shrouded in an inner darkness that no color can erase. This painting is more than just an image; it is an invitation to reflect—on femininity, silence, and the divide between the inner and outer worlds."
