Figo Birjandian and the Music of Color on Canvas

In a world where words often fall short, Figo Birjandian speaks through the language of color and movement—a language that resonates directly with the viewer's soul.

ArtDayMe : We take a closer look at a striking work by Figo Birjandian, a contemporary Iranian artist whose expressionistic style thrives within the framework of abstract expressionism. Created in 2019 using mixed media on canvas, the painting measures 100 × 150 cm and is part of the private collection of Behzad Khoshnevisan, CEO of Jahan Tahaavieh Rima.

This piece is a continuation of Birjandian’s personal artistic vision, embodying a deeply felt emotional current and a distinctly Eastern expressionistic approach. It is not crafted to narrate a story, but rather to evoke sensation—a visual explosion of color, spontaneous gesture, and the dynamic dance of forms across the canvas.

Rather than conforming to classical compositional structures or traditional focal points, the work derives its power from the deliberate chaos of vigorous brushstrokes, a bold rhythm of color, and an intentional disregard for symmetry.

Here, Birjandian constructs not an external reality, but an inner world—volatile, ever-shifting, and in constant renewal.

The painting’s color palette is rich and assertive: deep blues, vibrant greens, searing reds, and dense purples interplay with accents of black that pulse like rhythmic beats, guiding the viewer’s gaze.

These colors shine not in harmony but through their contrasts and confrontations, heightening the internal force of the piece.

Thick textures, splattered stains, and intentional scratches animate the surface, creating a vibrant, kinetic energy. The visual motion across the canvas resembles a musical composition—fluid, layered, and unpredictable—drawing the eye continuously, never resting in one place.

A mark of the artist’s sensitivity is his use of a stark white background, which serves to amplify the chromatic intensity and spatial drama of the work.

Figo Birjandian’s painting is a reflection of the turbulent inner landscape of the contemporary human spirit—a realm where hope and anxiety, freedom and constraint, silence and outcry are intricately interwoven.

Drawing on the legacy of Western abstract expressionism, Birjandian reimagines it through the lens of Eastern mysticism and cultural experience. Thus, forms appear like visual mantras, and colors emerge as manifestations of emotional states.

This work is not merely a visual artifact—it is an emotional event. It opens a pathway to subconscious dialogue and invites a liberation from conventional modes of perception.

In a world where words often falter, Figo Birjandian speaks through color and movement—a language that touches the essence of the viewer.

Birjandian held his first solo exhibition in February 2025 at Ariana Gallery in Tehran, showcasing selected pieces from three major series. Remarkably, all of the works in this exhibition were sold.

Born in Tehran in 1989, Figo Birjandian is a self-taught artist who grew up in an art-loving family and absorbed visual culture from an early age. After studying at the Canadian University of Dubai, he began painting professionally. His compelling large-scale compositions have garnered the attention of key art institutions.
