Mehrdad Fallah: Nostalgic Paintings in Vienna / Photos

ArtDayMe : Fifteen works by Mehrdad Fallah are currently on view at the Otto-Mauer Cultural Center in Vienna.

The painting exhibition “Nostalgia,” featuring works by Iranian artist Mehrdad Fallah, runs from September 12 to 27, 2025, at the Otto-Mauer-Zentrum in Vienna, Austria.

Opening on September 12, the show remains on view through September 27.

This art event has been organized through the joint curatorship of Zhila Farman Ashrafi (Iran) and Ghazal Ashrafian (Austria), with the support of Akram Annabestani. It welcomes enthusiasts of visual arts at 2–4 Währinger Street, District 9, Vienna.

On display are fifteen works by Mehrdad Fallah, drawn from his “Neo-Saqqakhaneh” and “The Wonders of Creation” series.

Born in Tehran in 1975, Mehrdad Fallah grew up in a traditional household — yet one far from ordinary. It was in this very home that Sadegh Tabrizi, a pioneering figure of modern Iranian painting, was also born. The late Tabrizi, Fallah’s uncle, became his mentor and chose him as a distinguished pupil.

Fallah’s works have appeared at four different auctions, all selling above their initial estimates:

– At the 21st Tehran Auction (October 2024) for 187 million tomans

– The Second National Auction (2015)

– Goharan Auction

– A charity sale in Los Angeles

His paintings have been shown in England, Switzerland, Italy, Belarus, Cyprus, Turkey, the United States (Los Angeles), Dubai, and of course Iran. Fallah’s entry into the art world dates back to 1998, at the age of 23, when he presented a reverse-glass painting exhibition at Gallery 66 — an influential space founded by Sadegh Tabrizi. He later held six solo exhibitions, among them the widely noted “Lion with Calligraphy” show at Art Center Gallery in 2015.

Over the years, Fallah has developed a distinctive signature, creating numerous works that merge painting with Iranian symbolism. He belongs to a circle of artists who draw from Iran’s rich pictorial traditions to craft modern and contemporary pieces. Notably, his series on Lions, Roosters, and “The Wonders of Creation” have brought him considerable recognition.

Many experts consider Mehrdad Fallah among the contemporary heirs and revitalizers of the Saqqakhaneh School.
