Figo Birjandian and Eastern Abstract Expressionism

A Burst of Emotion in Color and Motion — A Mystical Narrative Rendered in Painterly Action.

ArtDayMe : In the work of Figo Birjandian, Abstract Expressionism is reimagined through the lens of Eastern mysticism. His 2019 acrylic painting, measuring 120 × 150 cm and held in the collection of Afshin Hojjat Architecture Group, offers a radiant example of how emotion, intuition, and physical gesture intertwine in the process of creation.

Encountering Birjandian’s canvas is to face an explosion of color, movement, and sensation—an expressive choreography of inner experience rendered in bold abstraction. More than a visual structure, this painting is a sensorial and embodied memory of a lived moment. The color palette—a fiery array of reds, deep purples, dark blues, punctuated by luminous bursts of white, orange, and pink—evokes a storm of emotional intensity. These hues clash and converge, revealing the turbulence of the artist’s inner world.

The painting’s rhythm is electrifying, guiding the viewer’s gaze across layers and lines with relentless tension. Birjandian’s technique—marked by thick impasto layers, sweeping brushstrokes, controlled splashes, and the use of palette knives—brings a tactile physicality to the surface. The texture doesn't merely illustrate expression; it makes the presence of the artist’s body in the act of painting palpably felt.

Stylistically, the work aligns with the legacy of Abstract Expressionism, particularly its Action Painting branch, which privileges spontaneous gesture and physical immediacy over representational clarity. Yet, Birjandian introduces something distinct: a spiritual fervor, an intuitive ritual embedded in the act of painting. His abstraction feels less like an eruption and more like a visual rite—suggesting that for this artist, painting is not only a physical act, but a contemplative, inner journey.

Untitled and unconstrained, the piece resists narrative interpretation. Its meaning lies not in recognizable forms but in the sheer intensity of color, the energy of the line, and the charged tension of space. Rather than presenting an image, it offers an immediate emotional experience—an encounter with anxiety, ecstasy, and even meditative silence. It speaks not in words, but in the primal languages of pigment and movement.

Birjandian’s work does not aim to describe—it invites us to live. To live inside a suspended moment of unrest, in the liminal space between the visible and the invisible, between color and psyche.
