Salman Moghadasi and Horizons: Where Reason Yields to the Heart
At times, understanding the works of Salman Moghadasi challenges both the eye and the mind, demanding long hours of contemplation. Horizons (2021), an immense work measuring 8 by 3.45 meters, is one such creation.
ArtDayMe – Horizons is a true panoramic vision: a continuous, loop-like band painted on burlap with acrylic paste, natural pigments, and resin. The work blurs the line between action painting and semi-calligraphic gestures, relying on sweeping bodily movements and the rhythmic repetition of lines. The glossy sheen of resin, set against the coarse texture of burlap, embodies the union of tradition and modernity and places the viewer before a vast, ambiguous horizon charged with energy and motion.
The composition’s entirely horizontal format powerfully reinforces the title Horizons: a ribbon-like wave, at times dense and full, at times thinning into flowing drips. The surging movement seems to rush from left to right—or perhaps from right to left? This ambiguity, recurring in much of Moghadasi’s work, has become his unspoken signature.
Spontaneity is at the heart of Horizons. By modulating the weight of his sweeping strokes, Moghadasi infuses the painting with layers of meaning that invite discovery and contemplation. The dominant movement unfolds as waves or repeating loops, evoking both the passage of time and the rhythm of motion. Negative spaces punctuate the dark masses, opening the rhythm and guiding the eye between positive and negative fields. Splashes and droplets of paint further accentuate the action-driven quality of the work.
The color palette is largely earthy and muted—beige, brown, golden hues, and diluted black. The resin’s reflective surface introduces shifting luminosity within the darker fields. In some areas, the raw burlap texture emerges, grounding the piece in a tactile, elemental presence. Layers of acrylic paste and gum arabic form ridges, grooves, and cracks that resonate with the artist’s large bodily gestures. The interplay of natural pigments with modern materials (acrylic and resin) once again highlights the dialogue between tradition and modernity.
The monumental scale of the painting transforms viewing from a surface encounter into an environmental experience. Its sheer size forces the viewer to step back in order to grasp its entirety—not simply observing a painting but confronting a “horizon.” Spot and overhead lighting within the gallery intensify the resin’s shine and the raised textures, setting glossy and matte surfaces into dynamic contrast.
