From Beirut to Sharjah: Nadia Saikali’s Legacy at Maraya Art Centre with Barjeel Art Foundation

Nadia Saikali, born in Beirut in 1936, is a pioneer of Arab abstract art, whose canvases echo emotion, memory, and movement.

ArtDayME: Maraya Art Centre in Sharjah is hosting Nadia Saikali and Her Contemporaries, an exhibition running from 2 February to 13 July 2025. The exhibition is co-organised with the Barjeel Art Foundation.

Nadia Saikali, born in Beirut in 1936, is a pioneer of Arab abstract art, whose canvases echo emotion, memory, and movement.

Emerging from Beirut’s golden age of art in the 1960s, she trained in Paris and returned with a vision that introduced lyrical abstraction into the Arab art scene.

Alongside trailblazers such as Etel Adnan, Saloua Raouda Choucair, and Huguette Caland, Saikali helped redefine what it meant to be an Arab woman in art.

Her work blends poetry, power, and painterly rhythm — a quiet force in every stroke.

The exhibition continues through 13 July 2025.
