Nabil Nahas explores nature, geometry and spirituality at the Venice Biennale

ArtDayME - The Pavilion of Lebanon at La Biennale Arte 2026 is currently presenting Don’t Get Me Wrong, an immersive installation by Lebanese-American artist Nabil Nahas. Curated by Dr. Nada Ghandour, with scenography by Charles Kettaneh and Nicolas Fayad of EAST Architecture Studio, the project offers a layered exploration of identity, culture and history through a monumental visual experience.

Organized and produced by the Lebanese Visual Art Association (LVAA) under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, the exhibition is on view at the Arsenale in Venice through 22 November 2026.

Spanning 45 linear meters, Don’t Get Me Wrong comprises 26 acrylic-on-canvas panels, each standing three meters high. Installed side by side, the works form a large-scale frieze through which visitors move, creating an encounter that engages the senses before the intellect.

Through geometric abstraction, figuration and fractal patterns, Nahas examines the relationship between humanity, nature and the cosmos. Drawing on both Islamic and Western artistic traditions, the paintings weave together Mediterranean influences—including Greco-Roman, Judeo-Christian, Byzantine and Islamic heritages—into a complex visual language shaped by continuity and cultural plurality. Motifs such as polygons, spirals and trees evoke ideas of infinity, cosmic movement and the connection between earth and sky.

The installation also reflects the artist’s personal journey. Born in Beirut in 1949, Nahas spent his formative years between Lebanon and Cairo before settling in New York. His return to Lebanon following the civil war marked the beginning of a renewed and enduring engagement with his homeland, an experience that continues to inform his artistic practice.

Throughout the pavilion, Don’t Get Me Wrong presents Lebanon not as a fixed identity, but as a dynamic crossroads where cultures intersect, interact and remain vibrantly alive.
