ArtDayMe : Vista Gallery is presenting a compelling and thought-provoking exhibition curated by  Behnam Kamrani as part of Tehran’s Month of Art. Titled “Paper; From Material to Meaning,” the exhibition brings together innovative paper-based works by ten contemporary artists.

The exhibition features works by Mahdieh Abolhasan, Negar Javadi, Neda Jalili, Reza Rouhi, Hadi Arab-Narmani, Niloufar Ataei-Far, Amir Kabirnejad, Nastaran Kamran, Masoumeh Mehtadi, and Farnaz Nikookhah.

Behnam Kamrani, a painter, visual artist, and professor at the University of Art, who has curated the exhibition, writes in the exhibition statement:

«“Throughout the history of Iranian culture and art, paper has been more than merely a surface for recording thought; it has been a material that has carried memory, knowledge, poetry, imagery, and experience.

In the contemporary world, artists’ renewed engagement with materiality and the process of making has allowed paper to move beyond its traditional position and become a subject of aesthetic, social, and environmental inquiry. Today, the material qualities of paper—from its fibers, texture, thickness, and transparency to its capacity for deterioration, recycling, and transformation—contribute to the meaning of an artwork, while the process of production becomes as significant as the final result.

Focusing on paper art and papermaking in contemporary Iranian art, this exhibition seeks to reconsider paper not as a passive ground for an image, but as an independent, living, and evolving medium.

The works in this exhibition encompass a broad range of approaches: from reviving traditional methods of handmade papermaking and incorporating local materials to contemporary experiments in paper sculpture, installation, artists’ books, fiber art, material recycling, and interdisciplinary research. In these works, paper is simultaneously material, image, object, and idea; at times a carrier of historical memory, at times a sign of the fragility of human existence, and at times a metaphor for the possibility of transformation.

‘Paper; From Material to Meaning’ is an invitation to reflect on the relationship between hand and thought, material and memory, tradition and innovation. The exhibition demonstrates that paper, despite its seemingly simple and everyday nature, remains one of the most complex and poetic media in contemporary art—a medium in which every fiber, every layer, and every method of making contains a narrative of time, place, and human experience.”»

“Paper; From Material to Meaning” will remain on view through September 11, 2026 (20 Shahrivar 1405) at Vista Gallery, located at 12th Alley, Mir Emad Street, Motahari Street, Tehran.
