Abu Dhabi Unveils Noma Cultural District Ahead of Inaugural Frieze Fair
Abu Dhabi developer Aldar unveils Noma, a new cultural district, ahead of the inaugural Frieze Abu Dhabi fair, bringing global galleries to Saadiyat Island.
ArtDayME: Abu Dhabi is expanding its cultural ambitions with Noma, a new creative district announced by real estate developer Aldar ahead of the inaugural edition of Frieze Abu Dhabi. The project reflects the emirate’s broader efforts to strengthen its position as an international destination for contemporary art and cultural production.
Aldar, the official fair partner for Frieze Abu Dhabi, unveiled the name during Frieze London. Noma derives from “North of Manarat Al Saadiyat,” referring to its location near Manarat Al Saadiyat, a prominent arts and cultural center within Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District. Specific development plans, timelines, and details about the district’s future programming have yet to be announced.
Noma and the Region’s Growing Creative Landscape
The announcement comes amid a wider expansion of cultural infrastructure across the region, where dedicated districts have created spaces for galleries, artists, and creative organizations. Examples include Alserkal Avenue in Dubai, JAX District in Riyadh, and Miza, a creative neighborhood in Abu Dhabi centered on the Warehouse421 arts space.
Noma adds another potential destination to this evolving landscape, as Abu Dhabi seeks to build a cultural ecosystem that extends beyond major exhibitions and international art events.
Frieze Abu Dhabi Brings Global Galleries to Saadiyat
The inaugural Frieze Abu Dhabi will take place at Manarat Al Saadiyat from November 19 to 22, 2026. The fair is expected to bring together 88 galleries, with a particular focus on Southwest Asia and North Africa.
Its program will include Frieze Masters, the Focus section, and Frieze Sculpture, featuring public artworks along the beach at Mamsha on Saadiyat Island. The fair will also spotlight artistic practices connected to the United Arab Emirates through presentations spanning different generations and established regional artists.
However, geopolitical tensions and concerns over regional security and travel have created uncertainty for parts of the art market. Frieze has reaffirmed its commitment to the Abu Dhabi event, emphasizing that participant safety remains a priority.
Against this backdrop, Noma signals a longer-term ambition: to develop cultural infrastructure that can support artistic activity beyond the fair itself. Whether it becomes a significant hub for the region’s creative community will depend on the project's eventual scale, facilities, and programming.
