Desert X AlUla returns in January 2026 – curators and artistic directors announced

The theme "Space Without Measure" connects deeply with AlUla’s infinite horizons—a landscape layered with history, memory, and imagination.

ArtDayME: Desert X AlUla is set to return for its fourth edition from January 16 to February 29, 2026. This open-air art exhibition is a major attraction of the AlUla Arts Festival, which annually transforms AlUla into a lively hub for contemporary art, design, and culture. Curated by Wejdan Reda and Zoé Whitley, the event will once again feature Neville Wakefield and Raneem Farsi as artistic directors.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore artworks by both Saudi and international artists from various generations. These creations engage with the desert environment and the unique landscapes of AlUla. The theme for Desert X AlUla 2026 is "Space Without Measure," inspired by Kahlil Gibran's poetic vision. It draws on his reflections on possibility, perception, and the limitless nature of the human spirit.

Since its inception in 2020, Desert X AlUla has established a rich legacy of site-responsive artworks that interact with the extraordinary desert landscapes. Over 45 artwork projects have been produced for AlUla across its editions. The event has become an influential platform for both Saudi and international artists, contributing significantly to the evolving artistic heritage of AlUla and the broader region.

The upcoming edition will announce participating artists in the coming weeks. Desert X AlUla has also played a crucial role in paving the way for Wadi AlFann's development. This land art destination in AlUla is set to open in 2028. Wadi AlFann will be a 65-square-kilometre open-air museum designed to become a global cultural destination for monumental, site-specific, permanent land art.

Through Arts AlUla, the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) is dedicated to reviving the region’s rich artistic legacy. They aim to create opportunities for local communities to engage with art as a source of inspiration, education, and enrichment. This includes skills development, job creation, cultural exchange, and international collaboration.

Visitors attending Desert X AlUla 2026 will experience each artwork within its own unique setting as they journey through AlUla’s diverse landscapes. From its first edition in 2020, Desert X AlUla was recognised as the first public art biennale in the region. It established itself as a platform where artists could work within the landscape.

The theme "Space Without Measure" connects deeply with AlUla’s infinite horizons—a landscape layered with history, memory, and imagination. Desert X AlUla continues to be an essential part of this artistic journey.
