Misk Art Institute Presents ‘Along the Way’ Exhibition Featuring 34 Artists in Riyadh
Bringing together more than 34 artists and 69 artworks and objects, Along the Way draws on the legacy of journeys such as those of Ibn Battuta, exploring movement as both a physical and intellectual experience.
ArtDayME: Misk Art Institute is presenting Along the Way, an exhibition exploring journeys through space, memory, and experience, at Prince Faisal bin Fahd Arts Hall in Riyadh. The exhibition runs from September 16, 2026, to March 31, 2027, with free admission.
Bringing together more than 34 artists and 69 artworks and objects, Along the Way draws on the legacy of journeys such as those of Ibn Battuta, exploring movement as both a physical and intellectual experience.
The exhibition considers movement as something that extends beyond physical relocation. It unfolds across time, along roads and coastlines, through skies, screens, and shared spaces, as a way of knowing that engages both mind and body. It is not solitary, but takes shape through the ties that bind individuals to one another and through the circulation of experience by which understanding is formed, carried, and transformed.
Travel, in this context, holds a spiritual resonance, representing a passage through which the self is unsettled and remade, with each threshold offering the possibility of renewal.
The selected works span a range of artistic forms, including painting, photography, sculpture, digital practices, and archival materials, including rare manuscripts. Across these works, movement unfolds through landscapes, language, memory, cosmology, bodies in transition, and histories in motion. Mapping emerges as an open and interpretive act, shaped by lived experience rather than fixed coordinates.
At its core, the exhibition asks what it means to know through movement. The works approach cartography as both subject and method, loosening its structures into shifting forms. Routes fold back on themselves, and space is reimagined through affective cartography, which represents subjective human experiences and emotional life.
This approach extends into poetic cartography, based on the mythical, affective, and topological rather than a geometric concept of space, where movement becomes an expressive act.
The exhibition arranges the works as a series of crossings rather than a linear progression, encouraging viewers to pause and reorient themselves in relation to the works and to each other. In doing so, Along the Way explores movement as a condition of knowing. Each gesture, image, and archival fragment forms a coordinate in an expanding map of perception, where moving through space becomes an act of learning, and where every outward journey turns inward toward recognition and understanding.
