Art Basel Qatar names Wassan Al-Khudhairi as the creative force of 2027
Preview days for Art Basel Qatar 2027 are scheduled for January 26 and 27, after which the fair will open its doors to the public.
ArtDayME: Art Basel Qatar has released fresh information about its second edition, noting among its announcements the appointment of Wassan Al‑Khudhairi as artistic director and the introduction of the fair’s curatorial framework.
Based in New York, Al-Khudhairi has built a strong reputation through her extensive involvement with contemporary art institutions and international biennials. She previously served as the founding director of the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, playing a central role in its 2010 inauguration, and she is now a partner at The Curatorial / Office.
For the 2027 edition, she has shaped the conceptual direction around the theme “between/بين,” a notion that will guide both the artistic programming and the structure of the gallery presentations. The theme examines states of being “in between”—across places, identities, histories, and artistic mediums—positioning these intersections as generative spaces for dialogue and creative exploration rather than zones of ambiguity.
The fair will maintain the curated format established in its debut edition, encouraging galleries to present focused solo projects that engage directly with the central concept.
Applications for gallery participation in the 2027 event have also opened. The fair will once again unfold across Msheireb Downtown Doha, including venues in the Doha Design District and the M7 creative hub.
Organizers have stated that the Special Projects section will grow further, incorporating immersive works and interdisciplinary installations.
