Wael Shawky presents "I Am Hymns of the New Temles" at Art Basel Unlimited 2026

The installation is closely connected to Shawky’s 2023 film I Am Hymns of the New Temples, originally produced for the Pompeii Commitment Archaeological Matters program.

ArtDayME - Egyptian artist Wael Shawky is presenting the latest iteration of his project I Am Hymns of the New Temples in the Unlimited sector of Art Basel 2026. The work is jointly presented by Lia Rumma Gallery, Lisson Gallery, and Sfeir-Semler Gallery at Booth U54.

Making its debut at Art Basel Unlimited, the installation offers a sculptural exploration of Greco-Roman mythology and examines how myths are transmitted, reinterpreted, and sustained across time and cultures. Through the work, Shawky investigates both ancient and contemporary narrative mechanisms that shape the circulation of historical and cultural knowledge.

The installation is closely connected to Shawky’s 2023 film I Am Hymns of the New Temples, originally produced for the Pompeii Commitment Archaeological Matters program. The project has continued to evolve through subsequent presentations, including solo exhibitions at Museo di Palazzo Grimani during the 2024 Venice Biennale and at LUMA Arles in 2025.

The work is on view in the Unlimited sector of Art Basel at Messeplatz in Basel, Switzerland, from 18 to 21 June 2026.
