ArtDayME: Sliman Mansour, a prominent Palestinian painter and artist, passed away on Monday, August 25, at the age of 79. His family confirmed the news in a post on Instagram.

Born in 1947 in the village of Birzeit, near Ramallah, Mansour studied fine arts at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, graduating in 1970. From the 1970s onward, he was recognized as one of the founding figures of contemporary Palestinian art. Over more than five decades, he worked professionally as a painter, sculptor, cartoonist, and writer.

Among his notable works are The Camel of Hardships (1973), Homeland (2010), Memory of Places (2009), Olive Picking, Mother and Child, and Rituals.

Alongside creating his art, Mansour played a key role in establishing several arts and educational institutions. He was a co-founder of the League of Palestinian Artists and served as its head for a period. In the late 1980s, he was also a co-founder of the "New Vision" group, in which Palestinian artists used local materials such as mud, straw, wood, leather, and henna to create their works. He taught art at universities for many years and mentored numerous students.

Mansour's works are held in private collections and prestigious international institutions, including the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, the Museum of Modern Arab Art in Doha, the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, and the British Museum in London. He received numerous awards, including the UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture (2019) and the Nile Award for Arab Creators.
