Hamidreza Shafiei and Behdad Najafi’s Abstract-Arabesque Painting

This work by Behdad Najafi, from the Wave of Color series, is a fusion of rhythm, color, culture, and philosophy. At first glance, it captivates with its visual beauty and formal allure; yet with deeper reflection, it reveals layers of meaning and cultural references.

ArtDayMeBehdad Najafi, who has been painting professionally for 20 years while also being active in art gallery management, has recently participated in the joint project of Vesta Color and Mojdeh Gallery by dedicating a new work created with Vesta paints. This piece, numbered 11 from the Wave of Color series, was executed in acrylic on canvas in 2024.

Hamidreza Shafiei, Director of Vesta Color, expressed his delight that such a beautiful and striking work had been created with Vesta paints, thanking the distinguished artist Behdad Najafi for his contribution to this project.

He noted: “Rhythm and repetition are the two fundamental components of this work. The curving lines and successive circles, through their measured repetition, lend a musical rhythm to the painting. These swirling movements recall the waves of the sea or the flows of cosmic energy.”

Shafiei continued: “The use of diverse colors—purple, red, blue, and yellow—against a white background creates remarkable tonal contrasts. The raised textures and vibrant brushstrokes bring a dynamic, living quality to the piece.”

He emphasized: “Despite the apparent chaos of the lines, the overall composition remains harmonious and cohesive, striking a balance between complexity and calm. As the artist explains in his statement, the inspiration from Arabesque motifs and traditional Iranian ornamentation is evident. These circles and spirals trace their roots to calligraphy and Islamic architectural decoration.”

Shafiei added: “In Eastern art, the circle symbolizes perfection, unity, and infinity. Here, the multiplication of circles becomes a metaphor for the ceaseless motion of the universe and the cycle of existence. The colorful waves can be read as narrators of Iran’s cultural and historical layers—from tilework and carpet weaving to illuminated manuscripts.”

He went on to explain: “The circular forms and the element of repetition impart a meditative quality to the work, inviting the viewer to a state of inner focus and mental stillness. At the same time, the density and accumulation of lines suggest a flowing, inexhaustible energy, as though the viewer is immersed in an endless current of waves.”

The Director of Vesta Color further noted: “This painting can be placed within the lineage of geometric abstraction and abstract expressionism, yet its distinctiveness lies in its native roots. The esteemed Behdad Najafi, by drawing on Islamic motifs and Iranian ornamentation, has forged a bridge between tradition and modernity. According to the artist’s own statement, each work in this series embodies a narrative of history and culture. In this painting, the color waves operate as metaphors for time, motion, and infinity. The very concept of the ‘wave’ not only connects with nature but also symbolizes historical movement and the flow of culture.”
